VERSANT TEST PART A
In this task, you will read a sentence at a time, as prompted. You will be given a piece of paper and the sentences are printed on the test paper.
In case you take VERSANT from home, computer administration, the sentences are displayed on the computer screen.
Reading items are grouped into sets of coherent sentences, Take a look at the following example:
1. Larry's next-door neighbors are awful.
2. They play loud music all night when he's trying to sleep.
3. If he tells them to stop, they just turn it up louder.
4. He wants to move out of that neighborhood.
So you are prompted to read eight of the twelve sentences in a random order. The system tells the candidate which of the numbered sentences to read aloud (e.g., “Now, please read sentence 7.”).
After the you have read the sentence (or has remained silent for a period of time), the system prompts you to read another sentence from the list.
The sentences are relatively simple in structure and vocabulary, so they can be read easily and in a fluent manner by literate speakers of English.
For candidates with little facility in spoken English but with some reading skills, this task provides samples of their pronunciation and reading fluency.
The readings appear first in the test because, for many candidates, reading aloud presents a familiar task and is a comfortable introduction to the interactive mode of the test as a whole.
